2008 Michigania Program Staff Application

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in Michigania, the University of Michigan's alumni family camp. This summer 70 individuals will be hired to help ensure Camp remains the special place it has been for the past 44 years. Staff are hired to work in a specific program area and share responsibilities for the effective functioning of the Camp as a whole. You can expect to work six days per week, and even though working at a family camp offers more free time than a kids camp might, you are still expected to be a role model 24 hours per day. Michigania has been a special place to work since its inception. You can plan on meeting amazing UM alumni, getting to know kids and adults who will change your life, and making friends you'll keep for a lifetime. Congratulations on starting the journey toward becoming a part of the Michigania staff family!

Sincerely,

Ellen Byerlein
Assistant Director, Michigania

Staff Application Process

  1. Read this page fully.
  2. Click on the link below to go to the online application.
    1. Plan to complete the application in one sitting—you cannot return to edit your application once it has been submitted. You'll be asked for complete work/volunteer history and complete contact information for three references. These references should be professional in nature. Please do not list relatives or friends.

*NOTE: Returning staff do not need to list references.

    2. You'll have the opportunity to select your top three program area choices. Only list areas in which you are interested and skilled.
    3. Remember that you are applying for a job, not just a fun way to spend the summer. Do your best to sell your skills and experiences.
  3. Submit the application prior to April 15, 2008. Applications will be accepted after April 15 on an as-needed basis.
  4. Schedule an interview—interviews will occur between January 2, 2008 and February 28, 2008 and will take place in Ann Arbor or over the phone depending on your location.

Call (231) 582-9191 or email christaj@umich.edu to schedule an interview.

  5. Staff selections will be announced by mail by April 30th, 2008.

Important Notes for the 2008 Season

  1. The dates for summer 2008 are:

    Boating and Riding:	June 1 - August 30, 2008
    Ropes and Riflery:	June 2 2008 - August 30, 2008
    All other staff:	June 7, 2008 - August 30, 2008

Plan on moving in a day prior to your start date. Work will begin at 8:30am on the date listed above and will end at 5:00 pm on September 1. Due to the importance of staff training, and to the fact that we expect that all weeks of camp will be filled, strong preference will be given to those applicants who are able to work the complete length of the contract. If you have any conflicts with the dates listed, it is your responsibility to bring these forward before or during your interview.

  2. Background Checks

In addition to the voluntary disclosure information you complete on the application, this year all individuals offered positions at Michigania will be asked to participate in a background check. This is in line with industry standards and is similar to what other child-care organizations are doing. More information will be provided to you once you've submitted an application.

  3. Salary

The base salary for a 12-week position is $2100. Actual salary is based on experience and skills. Salary will be paid out in three payments: 20% on June 30, and 40% each on July 31 and September 1. Please note: individuals who do not fulfill the entire length of their contract will forfeit $500 of their final paycheck.
