Associate Membership

In an effort to better serve alumni, the Alumni Association has established a policy regarding Associate Membership and its benefits.

Alumni ("regular") membership status is available to those who have been regularly enrolled for at least one semester in a degree-granting program at the University, or have been designated as Honorary Alumni or granted an Honorary Degree by the Regents.

The Alumni Association's bylaws provide an opportunity for those who do not qualify for regular membership status to become associate members. Associate membership is available to those "who have shown an active and vital interest in the University of Michigan and the Alumni Association."

The Associate Member Application Process requires that non-alumni who wish to join must submit a letter stating their desire, including their relationship to the University and Alumni Association. Associate Member applications will be reviewed, and approval will be based on the level of commitment to/interest in the University and Alumni Association demonstrated in the application. The Alumni Association reserves the right to deny membership status to any non-alumnus/na. The following non-alumni are automatically eligible to become associate members, and need not submit an Associate Member Application:

  • Spouses of alumni
  • Parents of University of Michigan students and alumni
  • Faculty/staff of the University

Priority Consideration for Alumni Association Programs

To best serve the needs of University of Michigan alumni, priority for participation in Alumni Association-administered programs and services will be:

  1. Alumni members of the Association, University faculty/staff who are associate members, and all associate members who are members as of June 30, 1999 and continually maintain said membership will receive priority consideration for participation in Alumni Association programs and services.
  2. Associate members (excluding University faculty/staff) joining (or rejoining) after June 30, 1999 will receive priority consideration for participation in Alumni Association programs and services after the interests of all members in category 1 above have been accommodated.
  3. Alumni who are not members of the Alumni Association may be eligible to participate in certain Association programs at the discretion of the Alumni Association, after the interests of all members in categories 1 and 2 have been accommodated.

Note that University policy governing access to certain University resources (e.g., alumni information) may further restrict access exclusively to University of Michigan alumni for certain Alumni Association services (e.g., online alumni directory).
