About Stacy Garrop:
Stacy Garrop (www.garrop.com) received her Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University in 2000, her Master of Arts degree from the University of Chicago in 1995 and her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan in 1992.  She has won several competitions resulting in performances by the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Omaha Symphony, the New England Philharmonic and the Women’s Philharmonic, as well as readings by the Minnesota Orchestra, the American Composers Orchestra, and the Dale Warland Singers.  She won the 2005 Raymond and Beverly Sackler Music Composition Prize, received Barlow Endowment commissions in 2005 and 2001, and was a finalist for the 2001 Rome Prize.  Dr. Garrop was the 2004-2005 composer-in-residence of Chicago’s Music in the Loft chamber music series; she served in this capacity again in 2006. 

Garrop’s works have also been performed by the Amarillo Symphony, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the National Repertory Orchestra, the Santa Cruz Symphony, the Artaria String Quartet, EARPLAY. the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), the Princeton Singers, Volti and Chicago a Cappella, and many other ensembles and individuals.  She has attended residences at the Aspen Music Festival, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, the Banff Centre for the Arts, the MacDowell Colony, the Millay Colony, the Round Top Music Festival, the Wellesley Composers Conference, and Yaddo.  Theodore Presser Company and Hildegard Publishing Company publish several of her works.  The Biava Quartet recently recorded her String Quartet No. 2: Demons and Angels, which will be commercially available through Cedille Records in fall of 2007.

In choosing the inaugural winner of the Elaine Lebenbom Award, the DSO received adjudication assistance from the organization Meet The Composer, and a panel consisting of DSO Resident Conductor Thomas Wilkins; composers Jennifer Higdon and Michael Daugherty, who served as Resident Composer with the DSO from 1999 to 2003; DSO bassist Rick Robinson, a former finalist in the DSO’s African-American Composer Competition; and DSO violist Cathy Compton.
