The class of 2008 celebrates with pomp and circumstance tomorrow, Saturday, April 26, at spring commencement on the Diag. The location of the 10 a.m. ceremonies changed this year due to ongoing construction at Michigan Stadium. Graduating students voted in February to hold commencement on the Diag. ABC News anchor and special correspondent Robert Woodruff, JD'87, will serve as commencement speaker and receive an honorary doctor of laws degree. Five others will also receive honorary degrees. The Alumni Association congratulates members of the class of 2008 and welcomes them to the alumni family. The Alumni Association is sponsoring the inaugural Michigan Alumni Community Service Day this Saturday, April 26. More than two dozen alumni clubs around the country will participate in local service events, ranging from 5K walks to cleaning up beaches and volunteering at food pantries. Go online to find out what your local club is doing and to get involved. This fall the University will hold two special reunion events:

As young women today wrestle with decisions about work and family, they need all the support they can get. But the person whose support they crave most—their mother—often can't get on board. Why does a mother's approval matter so much? And why is it so painful for mothers when daughters choose paths different from theirs? In "Making Up with Mom," Julie Halpert, '84, and Deborah Carr answer these questions by focusing on the issues of dating/marriage, career and child rearing. Relying on interviews with nearly 100 mothers and daughters, and offering tips from more than two dozen therapists, the book explores a range of communication issues and how to resolve them.
Common hassles at work are more likely than long hours, night shifts or job insecurity to follow workers home and interfere with their sleep, according to a new U-M study. Respondents who felt upset or bothered at work on a frequent basis, or had ongoing personal conflicts with bosses or co-workers, were about 1.7 times more likely than others to develop sleep problems. "Massive changes over the past half-century have reshaped the workplace, with major implications for sleep," U-M sociologist Sarah Burgard said. "For many workers, psychological stress has replaced physical hazards."
Eighteen seconds after the opening sprint, junior Sharayah Hernandez of the No. 11-ranked water polo team scored against Indiana in the final round of the CWPA Western Division Championship, held Saturday in Grove City, Pennsylvania. One minute later she scored again, as did teammate Kelsey Haley at 2:18. U-M kept building on its quick lead from there, overcoming the Hoosiers 11-3 in the Wolverine's seventh-straight division title. Michigan will play host to the Eastern Championship today through Sunday at Canham Natatorium. The winner earns the CWPA bid to the NCAA Championships, scheduled at Stanford May 9-11. |
