Affiliate Relations Program Expectations
It is requested that formally recognized affiliate groups follow the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan's (AAUM) standards in the following ways:
- Align itself with the AAUM's mission.
- Provide diverse and interesting programming for U-M alumni.
- Communicate with affiliate group members using AAUM resources.
- Adhere to AAUM confidentiality and communication procedures.
- Appoint a group representative for the Alumni Leadership Council.
- Promote AAUM membership to its constituency.
- Be willing to cooperate and collaborate with existing regional program initiatives.
- Send attendance lists, registration lists, and/or sign in sheets after each event to keep the affiliate relations manager informed of event attendance and impact.
- Participate in the affiliate awards program by taking part in an annual planning meeting or call with the affiliate relations manager and submitting the necessary documentation to be considered for the awards program.
The Affiliate Relations Program Will Provide Affiliate Groups With:
- Event calendar listings on the Alumni Association's Web site calendar
- Web site and Internet support – hosting the affiliate group's Web site on the Alumni Association's server would allow the affiliate group be responsible for content and not Web site maintenance
- Expertise of the AAUM career services team
- Expertise of the AAUM regional relations team
- Use of AAUM conference call services for board/volunteer leadership meetings
- Coverage (marketing and event advertisement) in e-True Blue newsletters – both regional and widespread
- Participate in the AAUM football ticket program
- Access to AAUM communication tools: U-M listservs, inCircle, and other e-True Blue newsletters
- When it isn't possible for a group to use AAUM communication tools (for example, when a group wants to send a paper mailing or already has an established Facebook or Yahoo! Group), the group will work with the affiliate relations manager to ensure that effective communication is still taking place. The group also will work to include the affiliate relations manager on all groups and listservs.
- Financial sponsorship/support/loans – loan/sponsorship amount and specifics to be provided upon approval and after a formal request process. Money will be given for number of members an affiliate group has and affiliate groups can earn more money from the Alumni Association by increasing Alumni Association membership.
- AAUM giveaway items to be used at affiliate group events
- Branded items – AAUM nametags, paper banners, event sign-in sheets and balloons
- Volunteer leadership training
- Business cards for affiliate group leaders
- Survey/research services
- Guest speaker assistance – the regional relations team has already compiled a list of faculty/staff speakers that are willing to speak at regional events. Affiliate groups would have access to this list and to speaker resources gathered from the career services team.
- Dedicated phone line at the Alumni Center
- Fundraising assistance for those groups that agree to not charge membership dues
- By becoming an officially recognized affiliate group, the group will also receive:
- A letter of recognition confirming affiliate/charter status within the Alumni Association
- Evidence of insurance from the University of Michigan Risk Management Department
- Ability to utilize the AAUM's tax-exempt status for affiliate group activities, where applicable
