Alum You Can Meet: Matt Pickus, ’92, ‘97

Matthew received his bachelor’s of science from the U-M School of Natural Resources (1992, general ecology) and his master’s of science from U-M’s School of Public Health (1997, hazardous and radioactive materials management). After four years as an environmental consultant, Matthew received a master’s in business administration from Cornell University (2000) specializing in entrepreneurship and venture capital investing.
 
Matthew has spent eight years consulting to various startups and entrepreneurial firms, assisting with strategic planning, financing and marketing. He assisted with the development of a multimillion dollar community development venture capital fund, and is currently the VP of corporate development for a local high-tech startup. Matthew is also active as President of a small non-profit company dedicated to support of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day.

Alum You Can Meet: Brian Sabbadini, ‘91

Brian graduated from U-M in 1991 with his bachelor’s in political science.
He has more than 15 years in the sales/marketing world, and has represented leading brands such as Avery Dennison, Cross Writing Instruments and Welbilt. In his current position with NBS (Navigating Business Space), he works for Steelcase Furniture as an Account Executive in the Washtenaw Community area. He is a member of the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce, U-M Club of Toledo/ Heading up the Young Alumni Committee of Club, member of the Wood County Economic Development Commission and member of the Oregon Economic Development Foundation. Brian’s work experiences have allowed him to gain some insights into how the “real world of sales and marketing” play out, and he is happy to share that knowledge and experience with current students.

Alum You Can Meet: Deirde Kolm,’95

Deirdre Kolm is a real estate manager in charge of the firm’s real estate needs. In this role, she coordinates and oversees site selection, lease negotiations, office construction and ongoing lease matters. Deirdre specializes in financial evaluation of real estate transactions and construction projects. She has served as treasury manager, overseeing treasury, risk management and credit and collections for the firm.

Deirdre has been involved in firm-wide security evaluations, property valuations and long-term real estate planning. Prior to joining the firm, Deirdre managed accounting departments in manufacturing and insurance companies. In these roles, she oversaw financial reporting, treasury, receivables, payables, payroll and budget functions. She has coordinated numerous audits and been involved in negotiating labor union contracts, a corporate relocation and leveraged buyout. Deirdre was in public accounting, providing accounting and tax services to clients in manufacturing, food service, retail and medical service, at the start of her career.

 


Career Field:Entertainment, The Fox Theatre - Assistant General Manager
Alum You Can Meet: Molly Briggs, ‘88

Molly Briggs graduated from U-M in 1988 with a bachelor of arts in political pcience and has spent the nearly 20 years since working in the event, hospitality and entertainment business. Molly began her career working as an intern for Detroit Public Television and an event coordinator for the New Center Area Council in downtown Detroit.

In 1990, she was hired as a catering assistant at the Westin Hotel located in Detroit’s Renaissance Center. This 1,400 room convention hotel provided an excellent learning environment and while there, she was promoted to catering manager and then to sales manager.

In 1996, Molly left the Westin Hotel to become development coordinator for Olympia Development, L.L.C., a newly established Ilitch organization designed to cultivate and attract development in downtown Detroit. The company was instrumental in negotiating the side-by-side construction of the Detroit Tigers’ Comerica Park and Detroit Lions’ Ford Field, homes for the 2005 All-Star Game 2006 Super Bowl XL respectively.  

In 1999, Molly joined Sodexho Marriott Services as the director of catering and executive services for the General Motors account. In 2000, she returned to the Ilitch organization as the director of corporate sales and service for the Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit, and in 2005 was promoted to her current position of assistant general manager.  

Olympia Entertainment, Inc. is one of the industry’s most diverse and dynamic sports and entertainment companies, owning and operating Detroit’s Fox Theatre, as well as booking and operating Joe Louis Arena, Comerica Park, the City Theatre and Masonic Temple. A division of Ilitch Holdings, Olympia Entertainment is owned by Detroit entrepreneurs Mike and Marian Ilitch and is affiliated with The Detroit Red Wings, The Detroit Tigers, Little Caesars Pizza, Blue Line Distributing, Little Caesars Pizza Kits and Uptown Entertainment.

Alum You Can Meet: Darcy Turner,’92

Darcy Turner graduated from U-M in 1992 with a degree in industrial engineering. She worked as a consultant with Andersen Consulting (Accenture) for 7 years and focused on implementing PeopleSoft HR software for companies across the US. She joined the University of Michigan as the assistant director of HRMS Products & Services (HR, Benefits, Payroll, Time & Labor and Performance Support) in 1999. She partners with leaders in University HR, Payroll Office, Benefits Office and the Health System to provide the technology to enable their strategic initiatives.

 


Career Field: Human Resources Consulting/Outsourcing 
Alum You Can Meet: Steve Williams, ‘99

Steve has worked in human resource-related fields for the past seven years, since graduating from the U-M with a degree in economics. After selling payroll services for a Michigan-based payroll and tax-filing firm, Steve moved on to a call center software and consulting firm where he provided medium to large call centers with employee management tools and resources. It was at this time that Steve saw the very real need for human resource outsourcing and transitioned to a national Professional Employment Organization, serving as the Director of Customer Service. During the 3 year period that Steve managed the client service and operations team with this firm, his staff provided full HR management services to a base of 400 clients that employed over 10,000 people collectively. Steve’s experience includes all aspects of the hiring and employment process, as well as implementing and administering group benefit plans, including medical, dental, vision, and long and short term disability plans. Steve also oversees the creation and delivery of employment-related policies and procedures designed to minimize client liability.

Alum You Can Meet: Geoff Larcom, ’80, ‘82

Geoff grew up in Ann Arbor and attended Pioneer High and the U-M, earning degrees in political science and journalism. He worked for the Michigan Daily for four years, serving as sports editor his senior year. He has worked at The Ann Arbor News for 23 years, since, 1982, broken up by a stint as a sports copy editor at The Detroit News from 1985 to 1988. He served as sports editor of the AA News from 1988-2000. As a reporter and columnist for The News, he now covers higher education and writes a weekly column on town affairs.

Alums You Can Meet: Gary, ’70, ’75 and Nathan Ernst, ‘05 (father and son)

Gary Ernst attended U-M from 1970-1975 and graduated with a BSME and MSME degrees. After a few years working in the oil exploration industry, he changed industries to get involved in more technically challenging Aerospace industry working for a small gas turbine company in Walled Lake, Michigan. He is in his 31st year of employment at Williams International and has thoroughly enjoyed the many challenges through the years. He joined the company during the height of the cold war when the arms race was in full swing and this company had just won the contract to develop the world’s smallest turbofan engine which made the cruise missile possible. The company continues to supply small gas turbines to the military but has expanded its product line to other applications most notably the business jet market. He remains in the technical arena as the Director of Mechanical/Electrical Systems. www.Williams-int.com  

Nathan Ernst graduated from U-M in 2005 with a BSME and is currently working on his MSME. He works for a local fuel cell research company where he is involved in the development of a fuel cell tailored for powering an unmanned aircraft Vehicle (UAV) for military applications. www.Adaptivematerials.com

Alum You Can Meet: Dr. Marie Gebhart

Dr. Ann Marie Gebhart is director of technical and business development, Drinking Water Programs, at Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL). Dr. Gebhart’s primary roles at UL are business development and technical oversight of the water quality and water systems programs. She is chair of UL’s Environmental and Public Health Council and represents UL with key industry and regulatory stakeholders. She oversees the development of chemical risk assessments to support product certifications impacting the quality of drinking water. Dr. Gebhart established UL’s Expert Review Panel to provide outside peer review of these activities.

Prior to joining UL in 1999, she served as executive officer of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition and managing editor of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in Bethesda, MD. From 1990-1997, Dr. Gebhart held a number of positions at NSF International, including Vice President of Technical Operations and Director of Toxicology. Dr Gebhart also worked as Supervisor of Safety Assessment in the Department of Toxicology and Experimental Pathology for Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research Division/Warner-Lambert Company.

She holds an MPH degree in Environmental and Public Health and a PhD in Toxicology, both from U-M. Dr Gebhart also completed post-doctoral research at U-M in the Department of Pharmacology. She has served on the American Chemical Society’s Committee for Environmental Improvement; the American Water Works Association’s Public Advisory Forum; and U-M’s School of Public Health Alumni Board of Governors.

 


Career Field:  Biomedical/Pharmaceutical Science
Alum You Can Meet: Erica Angelique Guice, ‘03

E. Angelique Guice received degrees in biology and biopsychology and cognitive science from U-M. Since very early in her professional career, she has worked in the fields of molecular biology and genetics. She has been fortunate enough to be able to work utilizing many new technologies including human embryonic stem cells and laser-capture microscopy. She has worked in both biology and chemistry laboratories and is comfortable in both areas of study. Her worked has been published in peer-reviewed journals.

Recently, she was responsible for training individuals on lab and production procedures as well as ensuring that the laboratory and pharmaceutical manufacturing facility was in compliance with all state, federal, and university/company regulations.

She has written many compliance documents including standard operating procedures and chemical hygiene plans as well as ensuring proper documentation of material safety data sheets and laboratory chemical safety summaries. In addition, she was an integral part of a team that introduced a quality operating system for academic research within a large institution for the National Institutes of Health, which was adapted from quality operating systems commonly used in the automotive and finance industries.

She has a strong working knowledge of both Good Manufacturing Practices and Good Laboratory Practices. Moreover, she was responsible for ensuring that the products shipped and received were in compliance with several regulatory agencies in the United States, Canada, European Union, Philippines, Japan, China, New Zealand, Australia, and South Korea. Currently, she is employed in a pharmaceutical testing facility that is governed by Certified Law Enforcement Analysts.

 


Career Field: Science – Chemical Engineering
Alum You Can Meet: Laura Dellal, ‘03
Laura received her bachelor's in chemical engineering and minor in German studies (2002) and her master's in pharmaceutical engineering (2003) at U-M. From there, she started clerking at Kohn & Associates, a biotech intellectual property law firm in Farmington Hills, while going to law school at University of Detroit Mercy. She is currently a patent lawyer with Kohn & Associates, and will be heading their Los Angeles office this spring. She writes and prosecutes patents for universities and small and large companies both in the US and abroad. She works mainly with biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, and medical treatments. Patent law allows her to be on the cutting edge of science without actually being in a lab as well as using her writing skills to help clients. Her husband is a U-M neuroscience Ph.D. student, and she enjoys learning languages, studying Talmudic law, surfing, and sewing.

 


Career Field: Science – Dentistry
Alum You Can Meet: Dr. Kenneth W. Stoffers, ‘86

Dr. Kenneth W. Stoffers was born in Ashland, Oregon, in 1942. He grew up in a small farm town in Eastern Oregon. He did his undergraduate training at Brigham Young University and then attended the University of Oregon Dental School, graduating with his DMD degree in 1970. He attended graduate school at the University of Michigan, Rackham School of Graduate Studies, receiving a double MS degree in Dental Materials and Restorative Dentistry in 1986.

After graduation from dental school, Dr. Stoffers entered the US Air Force Dental Corps. He practiced in the Air Force for two years and then entered private practice in Sitka, Alaska. After two years of private practice, he returned to the Air Force where he achieved the rank of Colonel and spent the next 18 years, until his retirement in August of 1993. During that time, he was a staff dentist, vice commander of a clinic with 47 dentists, commander of a clinic with 19 dentists, commander of a 100-bed military hospital, and director of the US Air Force Dental Investigation Service in San Antonio, Texas. This was a dental materials research facility which evaluated dental equipment and materials for purchase by the US Government.

Dr. Stoffers retired from the Air Force and joined the faculty of the U-M School of Dentistry in 1993. He served as a clinical instructor, clinic director, D3 operative dentistry director, and co-director of the 614, 621 and 631 pre-clinic courses. He is a member of the ADA and serves on the Michigan Dental Association Peer Review Committee, Treatment, at the state level.
